Richard Baumy, a 44-year veteran of law enforcement, serves as Deputy Chief of the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office, third in command to Sheriff Jack A. Stephens.
Baumy, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office since the day Sheriff Stephens was first sworn in on July 1, 1984, served for years as Chief of Field Operations, overseeing virtually all uniformed sheriff’s deputies.
He was named Deputy Chief of all Sheriff’s Office operations in 2008, meaning second behind the Chief Deputy Sheriff and third in command to the sheriff.
Deputy Chief Baumy joined the New Orleans Police Department in 1965 and served more than 18 years, working as a homicide detective and rising to the position of Deputy Commander of Homicide before taking early retirement in 1984 to join the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office.
He has been a certified polygraph specialist for 28 years.
